USC football: Breaking down Matt Barkley’s season

It’s football, so the variables are numerous and unpredictable. But you can still make this statement with confidence about the USC football program:

As Matt Barkley goes, so will the Trojans.

The quarterback — who seems to be something of a lightning rod in the blogosphere — will be a junior next year, and that should be the time he really takes off.

Not that his sophomore season wasn’t praiseworthy. Barkley improved immensely from his freshman campaign, enhancing his touchdown-to-interception ratio from 15-14 to 26-12; his completion percentage from 59.9 to 62.6; and his efficiency rating from 131.3 to 141.2.

For the second year in a row, though, Barkley tailed off at the end of the season. His TD-INT ratio was 20-4 in his first seven games, 6-8 in his final five. So clearly there’s more work to be done.

“It could have been a lot better,” Barkley said. “I’ve still got a lot to work on this offseason, especially with timing with the receivers, which is going to be one of my big projects this offseason.

“Going into this offseason — my second real offseason where I know what I’m doing and have control of the offense — it’s going to be fun to get with these guys, and some of the younger guys too, and really teach them what I want out of them.”

Like predecessor Pete Carroll, although not to the same degree, USC coach Lane Kiffin believes in Barkley as a leader. Kiffin said it was important that Barkley played against UCLA, even though he was hurt, because “when you have your starting quarterback, you have a different feeling.”

Kiffin summed up Barkley’s season as “up and down … kind of like our whole team.” But Kiffin acknowledged that, as a true sophomore, Barkley should be graded on a curve.

“I always think how of far he’s coming a long (and that) none of those guys we had before had played yet,” Kiffin said. “He’s really been thrown in there.”

The guys Kiffin was referring to were Carson Palmer, a reshirt junior by the time Carroll’s staff arrived; Matt Leinart, who first started as a redshirt sophomore; and John David Booty, who was a redshirt junior by the time he started in 2006.

Barkley’s first two seasons compare favorably to those of many quarterbacks who started as freshmen. For example, through two seasons, Matthew Stafford of Georgia had 26 touchdowns and 23 interceptions, and Jay Cutler of Vanderbilt had 28 and 22. Barkley has 41 and 26.
