USC linebacker Cushing could be sidelined for Oregon State game

USC All-America linebacker Brian Cushing's status for the Oregon State game could be in doubt after he strained his hamstring.

Cushing participated in only a small portion of Tuesday's practice and there is a chance he could be a game-time decision on whether he plays.

"I'm sure I'll see how it feels," Cushing said. "I'm going to be smart about it and not push it until then."

Cushing said it would be "tough" if he did not play.

"I just have to take it easy," he said. "This is a strain. I've had worse."

If Cushing is unable to play, senior Clay Matthews would start at strongside linebacker.
What's Green's role?

USC coach Pete Carroll was still unsure exactly what junior Garrett Green's role as the backup quarterback would be if starter Mark Sanchez gets hurt.

"If it was a month, we might look at it differently," Carroll said. "Right now, he's the first guy in. We want the guys (on offense) to finish as fast as they can and Garrett can do that."

What if Sanchez were out for a quarter? "We'd see what happens," Carroll said.

Green was upbeat Tuesday about his promotion.

"It came on me real fast," he said. "I was down on the (scout) team and came back Sunday and cycled in to the No. 2 spot."

Green was pulled off the kickoff, kick return and punt return teams now that he is the backup quarterback, but said his heart remains on special teams.

"If I had
the insight to know I'd never get in (at quarterback), I'd play on special teams,"
he said. "I love playing it."

He wondered if he would get a better seat on the team's flight to Eugene, Ore., today now that he is No. 2.

"If I had a nice window seat, I'd fall asleep," he said. "I'm probably going to be smacked between two linemen." Corp No. 3

With Green promoted to the backup spot, USC might be the only program where it's an issue who is No. 3? Freshman Aaron Corp will officially be the third quarterback, which means sophomore Mitch Mustain is now No. 4. That means the Trojans will take four quarterbacks on the trip. Usually, a team takes three quarterbacks because road teams are limited to 65 players for Pacific-10 Conference games.
Fast start

One player who will not travel to Oregon State is freshman tailback Curtis McNeal, who just enrolled in school last week after being academically cleared. One of the biggest challenges for McNeal is starting classes three weeks late.

"One class had a paper due (this week) but I got a good grade," McNeal said.
No Tyler

Freshman tailback Marc Tyler will not make the trip to Corvallis because of a hip flexor. He did not practice Tuesday.
Not the lights?

Carroll said he did not believe the Coliseum lights were the reason for tailback Joe McKnight's migraine headaches. McKnight said last week the lights were the problem.

"I'm having a hard time believing it's the lights," Carroll said.

Sources said last week McKnight also suffered a concussion.
