Report card: Grading the Trojans (vs. Stanford)
The grades are in for USC’s 37-35 loss at Stanford. Am I being too kind? Too harsh? Your votes count!
OFFENSE
* The good: Matt Barkley and Robert Woods lit up the Stanford secondary, with Barkley passing for a career-high 390 yards and Woods catching 12 passes for 224 yards and three touchdowns (all career bests). … Freshman tailback Dillon Baxter scored his first career touchdown, an 8-yard run out of the Wildcat formation.
* The not-so-good: The running game never got going against the Cardinal’s physical 3-4 front, gaining just 108 yards with an average of 3.9 yards per carry. … Coach Lane Kiffin said Barkley and Ronald Johnson were “trying to do too much” against Stanford’s blitz on USC’s next-to-last possession, resulting in USC turning the ball over on downs.
* The grade: B
DEFENSE
* The good: Shane Horton came off the bench for the injured Malcolm Smith and recorded a team-high 10 tackles, including two for losses, and a forced fumble. … The defense as a whole forced three turnovers, with Horton, Chris Galippo and Nick Perry making the strips, and Shareece Wright, Jurrell Casey and Torin Harris the recoveries.
* The not-so-good: The defense allowed 37 points, 478 yards, 27 first downs and a 75 percent third-down conversion rate. … For the second week in a row, the unit had a chance to stop the opposition on a last-minute drive but failed to do so, instead surrendering the winning field goal.
* The grade: D

SPECIAL TEAMS
* The good: Jacob Harfman averaged 45 yards on two punts, dropping one inside the 10-yard line. … Woods averaged 28.7 yards on three kickoff returns, with a long of 33.
* The not-so-good: After USC tied the score at 28-28 early in the fourth quarter, the kickoff-coverage team surrendered an 88-yard return to Chris Owusu, setting up the go-ahead touchdown. … Harfman failed to produce a touchback in six kickoffs.
* The grade: C-minus
COACHING
* The good: Kiffin had his team motivated, ready to play and giving all-out effort despite its goal of a 13-0 season no longer being possible. … After Woods failed to catch a pass the previous week, the offensive staff did a better job of involving him in the game plan.
* The not-so-good: Even though the linebackers are struggling in zone pass coverage, Monte Kiffin continued to call for those alignments in critical situations. … Kiffin & Co. failed to come up with any schemes that fooled Stanford QB Andrew Luck, who completed 20 of 24 passes for 285 yards and three touchdowns.
* The grade: D-plus
