USC Football Returns Home To Host Arizona
USC, looking to bounce back from its first loss of 2011, begins October play against Pac-12 South Division foe Arizona. The Wildcats come in limping off of 3 straight defeats to Top 10 teams, but they won in their last visit to the Coliseum. The Trojans have a bye week after this game. In its loss last weekend at Arizona State, USC showed flashes of brilliance alternating with periods of vulnerability. The Trojan offense is guided by QB Matt Barkley (fifth on USC's career passing and total offense lists), Pac-12 leading WR Robert Woods (he is in the national Top 25 in receptions, receiving yards, all-purpose yards and kickoff returns) and hard-charging TB Marc Tyler (he has a pair of 100-yard games already in 2011). USC's defense features veterans such as S T.J. McDonald, CB Nickell Robey, DE Nick Perry and LB Chris Galippo. Eighth-year head coach Mike Stoops' Arizona club fell at home last week to Oregon (the Wildcats have lost their last 6 league contests). UA has a potent passing attack (fifth nationally in passing offense at 372.5), but is averaging just 62.3 yards on the ground (second lowest in the nation). QB Nick Foles, the Pac-12 total offense leader, ranks high on the school's career TD pass and pass yardage lists. The 70% passer has yet to throw a 2011 pick in 183 attempts. The wide receiver corps features the likes of 2010 All-Pac-10 first teamer Juron Criner (he is in UA's all-time Top 10 in receiving TDs, receptions and receiving yards), David Douglas, David Roberts, Texas transfer Dan Buckner and West Virginia transfer Gino Crump. The Arizona defense includes the Pac-12's second leading tackler in S Marquis Flowers, plus LBs Paul Vassallo and Derek Earls and veteran CB Trevin Wade, who has 11 career interceptions. P Kyle Dugandzic leads the Pac-12 in punting with a near-50-yard average. The game will be shown live nationally on FSN. There will be on-field salutes of some former USC Olympians, as well as 2012 USC Athletic Hall of Fame inductees.
