USC FOOTBALL NOTES: Passing comment serves as motivation

USC practices are closed to the public because of NCAA sanctions, but a recent unexpected open practice served as motivation for the Trojans defense.

When rain forced the Trojans to practice on the FieldTurf of Cromwell Field, which does not have fences to close the public's view, cornerback Shareece Wright said he heard a student pass by on his bike.

"Someone on a bike said something about wrapping up," Wright said. "I thought, `Oh, that's how people feel about us. We can't tackle."'

Wright said the incident provided some motivation for calling last week's team meeting of defensive players.

"I told the young guys, think like this is it for you," Wright said. "Don't settle for, `Oh, I'm young.' The focus and attending to detail was there (in Saturday's victory against California)."

Wright said the defense's rejuvenation, which caused it to move up 10 spots to 90th nationally in total defense, is not complete after one good performance.

"Even after this we have a lot of work to prepare for Oregon (on Oct. 30)," Wright said.

Defensive tackle DaJohn Harris said the Trojans' defense was also motivated by its poor play against Washington and Stanford.

"We don't want to be that defense that gives up," Harris said. "There is some anger. Nobody likes to lose. We're tired of losing."

No challenge

Tight end David Ausberry finished the Cal game at running back for the first time in his career but scoffed at the idea it was any kind of transition for him.

"I know how to play running back and play football," said Ausberry, who last played tailback five years ago in high school.

Trojans honored

Quarterback Matt Barkley was named the Pacific-10 Conference's Offensive Player of the Week and kicker Joe Houston was the Special Teams Player of the Week.

Coaching call

Wide receiver Robert Woods, who caught seven passes for 116 yards against Cal, said he was never double teamed by the Bears. Woods caught 12 passes the previous week for 224 yards.
