Odd questions are the norm for prospects at the NFL combine

Along with medical tests and drills to measure physical skills, the NFL combine that ends today allows 32 teams to talk to top prospects for 15 minutes each. And the questions are not always about football.

"I'm loving it," Rutgers WR Kenny Britt said at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. "They all come with their own crazy ideas." The strangest question, Britt said, was, "If you die, what kind of animal would you like to come back as: a cat or a dog?"

Rey Maualuga, a linebacker from Southern California with long, thick, dark hair, said a coach had asked him if he would "flip out" if he were told to cut his hair.

Scott McKillop, a linebacker from Pittsburgh, said he was discussing his mother when a scout suddenly blurted, "Have you ever smoked marijuana?"

Marcus Freeman, an Ohio State linebacker, said a coach had asked him whether he would prefer to make five Pro Bowls or one Super Bowl. He found the question hard to answer.

If he chose Pro Bowls, Freeman said, "It's not about the team." But if he said Super Bowl, "You don't want to be the best."

His answer?

"Super Bowl," Freeman said.

Laurinaitis leader
Most players have agents in town who hire advisers to teach the players to communicate, but some are just naturally gregarious. James Laurinaitis, a linebacker from Ohio State, spoke of his father, a professional wrestler known as Animal, and his mother, a fitness model.

"I've been blessed with great genes," Laurinaitis said. Regarding his position, he said: "I like being the leader. In the middle, you're held more accountable. I love being that guy."

Laurinaitis has hair as short as Maualuga's is long. All week, Maualuga said, he has been singing the Trojans' fight song to Laurinaitis and Freeman to remind them that the Trojans beat the Buckeyes last season.

New York minutes
Giants Coach Tom Coughlin — a stickler for efficiency and scheduling — praised the evolution of the combine, recalling years when scouts "had to scramble to get interviews with players."

Now, Coughlin said, "There's very little wasted time."

Rex Ryan, the new Jets coach, was one of the most visible visitors, smiling broadly and often as he made the rounds. Ryan, the son of the famed NFL coach Buddy Ryan, avoided questions about going after the potential free-agent LB Ray Lewis, whom he coached as the defensive coordinator in Baltimore.

"The tampering rules," Ryan explained.
