Jim Schwartz made headlines even before he'd been hired as Lions coach, joking "it's probably time to find a replacement for Bobby Layne."
But speaking at the NFL owners' meetings Monday, Schwartz made it clear the search for Layne's heir apparent -- even a half-century later -- doesn't necessitate drafting a quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick in April's draft.
"It is the most important position, I'll grant you that,"
Schwartz said. "I think when you're building a team, it's the first question you have to answer. If you're drafting first (overall), I don't know that you can say the same thing. There's plenty of ways to build a team."
