The final college football awards 'watch list' was released on Monday, with the Walter Camp Football Foundation giving us its forty “players to watch” for its annual Player of the Year award.
Representing the University of Southern California on the 2011 Walter Camp watch list was none other than junior quarterback Matt Barkley.
The 6-foot-2 Barkley enters his third year as the Trojans' starting quarterback and looks poised for a breakout season in 2011 after passing for 2,791 yards with 26 touchdowns to just 12 interceptions last year.
Barkley, who was also named to the 2011 Davey O'Brien Award watch list last week, was one of six players from the Pac-12 conference named to the Walter Camp list.
Since the award was created in 1967, six Men of Troy, O.J. Simpson, Charles White, Marcus Allen, Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush, have all earned Walter Camp trophies during their respective tenures at USC.
By mid-November, 10 semi-finalists will be selected, with the 2011 Walter Camp Player of the Year recipient selected from that group of ten by a vote that will include the 120 NCAA Bowl Subdivision head coaches and SI directors.
The Walter Camp winner will be announced on December 8th, 2011 during a live awards show on ESPN.
