USC huge win at Oregon

What we learned: That second-year Southern California coach Lane Kiffin is just flat out getting it done, in recruiting, in organizing and in play-calling.

The NCAA sanctions to come -- 10 scholarship losses per year for the next three years -- may or may not knock the Trojans out off contention for conference championships and BCS bowls, for which USC will be eligible next year after a two-year ban.

But Kiffin and the Trojans proved without a doubt Saturday that they have young talent that can play hard and tough and smart and at one of the toughest places in the county to play -- cold, raucous, fans-on-top-of-you Autzen Stadium -- and win.

The Trojans went up to Oregon as prohibitive underdogs and took a 21-7 lead, then a 38-14 lead, then held on for a 38-35 victory against a team that was ranked No. 4 in the country and starting to make a case for a shot at a national championship.

Instead, it was the Trojans that made the big move in the rankings -- ranking, that is. USC moved from No.18 to No.10 in the AP poll. The Trojans are ineligible for the USA TODAY coaches' poll and the BCS rankings because of -- all together now -- sanctions resulting from extra benefits provided to former tailback Reggie Bush (remember him?).

Some of the biggest playmakers on the field for the Trojans were freshmen, including wide receiver Marqise Lee and linebacker Hayes Pullard.

The Trojans might lose some juniors to the NBA draft -- most prominently, quarterback Matt Barkley, whose NFL stock continues to soar -- but it's possible they could return 18 or so starters next year. The quantity of USC scholarship players will go down, but the quality is tremendous.

The coaching has been excellent. When a team gets better and better and better all season, that says a lot about coaching. USC started the season stagnant and mistake-prone and looked terrible in a 21-point loss at Arizona State. But the Trojans are 6-1 since, the only loss being a triple-overtime loss to Stanford that easily could have been a victory.

Now they have beaten Oregon, a team that many people said was playing the best football in the country.

They did it the old-fashioned way, with balanced offense and rugged defense.

They ran the ball. They defended the run, allowing Oregon yards (who doesn't?) but making difficult tackles in space against lightning quick Ducks playmakers -- the kinds of plays that make a difference in a game but are hard to quantify.

They also protected Barkley, giving him time to do his thing. And his thing, right now, is magical. He threw for 323 yard and four touchdowns.

With him back at QB next year, the Trojans could conceivably begin the season in the top five and make a run at a national title.

Without him, who knows? There are highly recruited QBs backing him up, waiting for their chance.

Whoever is the QB next year, he will have a lot of talent around him.

Best performance: With USC star wide receiver Robert Woods still not 100% because of nagging shoulder and leg injuries, Marqise Lee became the primary target of Matt Barkley Saturday night at Oregon and he delivered a spectacular performance.

Lee, a true freshman, caught eight passes for 187 yards, including a 59-yard touchdown pass.

Biggest disappointment: Nick Montana, son of NFL legend Joe Montana, got his first start for Washington, starting in place of injured Keith Price, but threw for just 79 yards as the Huskies were upset by Oregon State 38-21. It was just the third victory of the season for the Beavers.

Looking ahead: Oregon, despite losing its hopes of a national championship shot, is still the favorite to win the Pac-12 title and get to the Rose Bowl. The Ducks will win the Pac-12 North with a victory against struggling Oregon State, earning the right to host the inaugural Pac-12 championship game Dec. 2.

The South division is up for grabs, with UCLA (5-3 in league), Utah (4-4) and Arizona State (4-4) all still in contention.

UCLA would win it with an upset over USC this week. If the Bruins lose and Utah (vs. Colorado) and Arizona State (vs. Cal) win, it's a three-way tie and ASU would emerge with the tiebreaker win.

Whoever wins the south, it will be a big underdog vs. Oregon in the title game.
