USC football: Is Lane Kiffin too unemotional?

I was at a dinner party recently with a USC fan who complained about Lane Kiffin‘s boring public persona.

He seldom laughs. He rarely rants. He doesn’t spew soundbites like his predecessor, Pete Carroll, who’d fill our notebooks and recorders with anecdotes and witty rejoinders.

I’ve also read comments in this here blog that Kiffin is too unemotional and that that prevents him from adequately firing up the troops.

While I agree that Kiffin isn’t exactly Mr. Personality in public settings, I disagree with the notion that his lack of outward zeal hurt the 2010 Trojans.

Being around the team for every game and almost every practice, I didn’t get the sense that the players lacked motivation at the end of the season — or, if they did, that it had anything to do with Kiffin.

Was USC in the proper frame of mind to beat Oregon State in Corvallis? Obviously not. But it was hardly the first time the Beavers ambushed the Trojans at Reser Stadium. And this particular USC team had much less at stake than others who have fallen victim there.

All this team had to play for that night was preserving the possibility of a 10-victory season, the last attainable make-it-up-as-we-go-along goal in a lost year. It isn’t easy getting up for games when you’re used to playing for something and that something gets taken away. Just ask the 2009-10 USC men’s basketball team, which ran out of steam at the end of a season lacking a postseason.

Were the Trojans “flat” the following week against Notre Dame? They didn’t play well, to be sure. But this wasn’t a repeat of the emotionless ’09 home finale against Arizona. If anything, players such as Mitch Mustain — who had plenty to play for — were too jacked up. His first pass attempt didn’t skip off the turf; it sailed over Ronald Johnson‘s head.

If you want to criticize Kiffin’s overly conservative strategy in that game, go right ahead. His play-calling wasn’t inspiring stuff. But if Johnson catches that pass at the end of the game, are we even having this discussion?

Mr. Passion Bucket himself, Rick Neuheisel, certainly seems more emotional than Kiffin. But it hardly helped Neuheisel’s Bruins in the season finale against the Trojans. (Final score: USC 28, UCLA 14.)

Having a fiery personality isn’t a prerequisite for success. Look at Tony Dungy. Or Bill Belichick.

It’s about having your team prepared. It’s about recruiting the right players. It’s about coaching them up.

Kiffin still has a lot to prove as a head coach. There’s one simple way he can quiet his critics:

Win.
